Embracing "the Other"
How many times we have talked about equality in one
criterion and then in our actions shown discriminations basing on another
criterion. I complain my grand mother is showing discrimination based on caste
and then I completely neglect that I am showing discrimination based on habits
of the people. Criteria have changed but the issue still remains. I wonder how
come we started calling it evolution.
Evolution happens when we understand and accept who we are
and then work on who/what we wanted to be. Talking of acceptance is completely distinct from doing
it. It appears across in humans to
societies to organizations to countries.
Change as charity should start at home but if the scale of
change is very high then it should come from people of higher power or responsibility
for quick turnaround. I have observed one such thing recently and I am glad
that such things are started.
Courts have declared and in some countries it has become law
that “the other” gender apart from male and female should be accepted in the
society. We even watch in movies and series but are we actually in position to
accept them. To put it bluntly are we in position to feel comfortable with a
person of same gender have a chemical reaction over u? Even if you say No to the proposal, r
we in a position to behave normally under his/her presence. My point is change
is hard but it has to start somewhere.
Recently I have a seen the following thing while going through a university application:
The mention of the "Other" gender. I was thrilled not because I belong to that category but a step in accepting the "Other" has taken a big leap. It might take some time for other colleges to adopt but will definitely will happen. After some generations I sure people will take casually about the gender.
PS: Do not be surprised when you see special toilets in malls or bus stations. Just think that it is to cater the needs of other gender.
PPS: The university name is CASS, located in UK, London.
